In most cases you simply need to follow your objective marker. There are multiple ways to approach each mission and target and thus exploring the open world is always the best solution to this problem.
1. Start by pausing the game to view your current objective.
2. Next, check the mini map in the bottom right corner. Look for your objective marker to find the next location.
3. Use the objective counter located to the left of the mini map to see how close you are to the next location.
4. If you still have trouble finding your way, pause your game and choose to restart the mission, looking for any doors or rooms that you may have previously missed.
