Computer Takes a Long Time to Move

QUESTION:

The computer is taking too long to make a move. What is wrong?

ANSWER:

There are several factors that will affect the computer’s speed when calculating the next move.
  • Ensure that there are no unneeded background programs running in the background: Chessmaster requires a large amount of system resources to calculate the best move. Not having enough system resources will cause the program to proceed with a weak move, or it will stall when making a decision.

Windows 98/ME Users:
  1. Press Ctrl-Alt-Delete
  2. End Task all items on the Task Manager Except for Systray and Explorer.
Leaving these two items running in the task manager will ensure there are no background programs running to prevent conflicts and to ensure that the program has access to full system resources.

Windows XP users:
  1. Press Ctrl-Alt-Delete
  2. Click on the Processes Tab
  3. End Process all items associated with your User name except for Explorer.exe and TaskMgr.exe.
Make sure to leave the items labeled as Local Service, Network Service and System. This will ensure there are no background programs running to prevent conflicts and to ensure that the program has access to full system resources.

  • Setting the time limit for your chess match will allow you to predict how long the computer will take to make it’s move. In the center of the New Game Detail Menu, the Time Controls can be manipulated. The more time you give the computer player to finish the game or make a move, will determine how long the computer player will take to calculate it’s next move.
  • Do you have enough free space on your hard drive? Chessmaster needs at least 20 MB free hard drive space to use as a holding area for uncompressed sounds. If your computer has less than 20 MB free space, they software is forced to ‘work harder’ by continually freeing space on the hard drive. This will slow the computer’s performance during game play.
