Performance Issues In Watch Dogs 2

Watch Dogs 2 doesn't run as smoothly as I expected. Can I do something to improve performance?

Our teams have optimized Watch Dogs 2 to run as smoothly as possible on various systems, but if you experience performance issues - low framerate, screen freezing for a very short time, action slowed down - the following info may help you understand the root of the issue and correct the situation.

System requirements

A good first step is to check the system requirements for the game.
My system meets the minimum requirements:
The game will run smoothly with lower graphical settings, but higher graphical settings will strain your system.

My system meets recommended requirements:
The game will run smoothly in the vast majority of cases, but specific graphical settings and setup need a more powerful gaming system.
The use of the High Res Texture pack - allowing you to set the Texture Resolution parameter on Ultra - requires a GPU with 6GB of dedicated VRAM for a smooth experience. Likewise, going for a 4K resolution will be more demanding on your system.

Basic Troubleshooting

There are some steps you can take to try to improve performances.

1. Perform a clean installation of your graphics card drivers

The most common cause of slow performances for players meeting the system requirements is out of date graphics drivers. To ensure that your drivers are up to date:
- Head to the download driver section of your GPU's manufacturer (for example, the Nvidia or AMD website)
- After selecting your GPU and downloading the executable, double-click on it to start installing the new drivers.
- For Nvidia drivers, we recommend that you perform a clean installation. AMD drivers follow a different process, and we encourage you to consult the various guide available on Internet regarding the steps to take to perform a clean install of these drivers.
- Reboot your computer after the installation and try again.

2. Change the graphic settings

An easy way to boost performance is to head to the Video options screen and try settings the parameters on lower settings. To reach this screen:

- From the main menu, select Settings
- On the next screen, click on Video
- In the Video menu, click on the Display tab

Video Options

On this screen, you'll be able to change the overall Graphic Quality and set it lower, or to fine-tune your settings. Keep in mind that some of those options are more demanding than others.

If you experience CPU bottlenecking - your CPU usage rise sharply, resulting in slower performances - try specifically putting the Extra Details slider at 0% and reducing the Geometry and Vegetation settings

Note that there's is a handy little graph on the top right of your screen showing the amount of VRAM available to your GPU, and the projected amount of VRAM the settings you choose will require. Getting over the available VRAM will very likely result in slower performances.
