En Passant Capture

QUESTÃO:

While playing a game, one of your pawns is captured by the computer in a move that appears illegal.

RESPONDA:

In special circumstances, your pawn can be captured when the computer's (or opponent's) pawn moves diagonally and behind your piece. This move is referred to as an "en passant" capture. A description of this move follows.

The French phrase for "in passing" is En Passant. The following items describe the moves of the pawn.

1. Basic Move: The first time a pawn is moved, it has the option of moving two spaces forward instead of the usual one space. (This option is lost for that piece after it moves either one or two spaces.)
2. Diagonal Move: To capture another piece, a pawn must move diagonally. (This is the only way a pawn can capture.)
3. En Passant Capture: The Set Up

· To begin, the first pawn has advanced to the fifth rank (fifth row) on the board.

· In an adjacent column, an opposing pawn moves out two spaces.

· The first pawn moves diagonally behind the opposing pawn and declares an "en passant" capture.

· The captured (opposing) pawn is then removed as if captured normally.

NOTE: An "en passant" capture is sometimes recorded using "e.p." to signify that such a capture has taken place (e.g., exd5 e.p.).
